Saturday Enrichment Program

Our Saturday Enrichment Program will take place on five consecutive Saturdays, starting October 22 through November 19. We are offering Parent-Child Story Time and Parent-Child Music Time. These programs are designed for the preschool child, accompanied by a parent. Young siblings are welcome. Our staff members will be running this program which is free to all NIS families. Look in your child's backpack for further information.

Incredible Years Parent Education Workshop

The Incredible Years Curriculum is a nationally known curriculum that NIS uses to help develop positive social emotional development in our students. We are offering an eight session series of workshops to parents to discuss ways to increase positive behaviors and manage negative behaviors in the home. Topics include better limit setting, reward and incentive programs, how to better praise your child, how to apply consequences for behaviors, and how to use attention to change behaviors.

The workhops will be offered in the daytime and in the evening and will be run by an NIS psychologist. Look in your child's backpack for more information.

OPEN SCHOOL NIGHT

Thursday, October 6, is our Open School Night. The parents and guardians of our students are invited to attend to learn more about your child's program and to meet the staff. Our evening begins at 7:00 with a visit to your child's classroom. This will be followed at 7:30 by a general meeting in our Open Space. We look forward to seeing you!

School will be closed on Thursday, September 29th and Friday September 30th for Rosh Hashanah. School will re-open on Monday. October 3rd.

Special Event for September

Our Special Event for September will take place during the week of September 26.. Each class be scheduled for an individual time and parents are invited to join their child's class at that time. Much of this month has been spent on helping the children learn about themselves, their families and their likes and dislikes. During the Special Event, parents will help their child create a self portrait using a variety of materials.

Weather Does Not Stop Family Fun Night

Threats of rain did not stop our Family Fun Night. Luckily the rain held off and we were able to welcome our new and returning families in our outdoor event area. Our sudents and their siblings enjoyed the Bounce House, the Fun Maze, bowling, golfing, creating sand art and all our other activities. Cotton Candy was the most popular snack with ice cream running a close second. Thanks to all our staff members who volunteered their time, and of course thank you to all our families for giving us the opportunity to get to know you even better!

Family Fun Night Rescheduled Due to Rain

The weather forecasters are predicting rain for Thursday, September 15, so we are postponing the Family Fun Night. This outdoor event is now rescheduled for Wednesday, September 21. We hope to see all our families there!

Welcome to the New School Year

After a week without power due to Hurricane Irene, NIS welcomed our new and returning students with electricity restored and happy grins on the faces of our staff. We are always filled with anticipation for the first day of school, waiting to see the wonderful faces of our preschoolers.
We have a busy schedule ahead of us. Our annual Family Fun Night will take place on September 15th. This is a "lets' get acquainted event" in which our families join us for a variety of activities including a bounce house, face painting, bowling, bean bag toss and refreshments. At the same time, we will be holding a Book Fair September 12-15. It will be open during Family Fun Night so parents can browse the books that are geared for children of all ages.
We look forward to getting to know all our new families, and saying hello to those who are returning.

Summertime at NIS
With the end of our summer program we look back upon 6 weeks filled with fun and learning for our students. Our activities ranged from "camping" activities, celebrating our favorite summer foods, exploring the ocean world of fish, shells and the beach. Our Special Event took place outdoors with a Hawaiian theme. Our students and their parents wore leis around their neck, played outdoor games, ate pineapple and other fruits, and enjoyed the bounce house. Fond farewells were said to our graduating students and their families. We look forward to September, reuniting with our returning children and welcoming our new students.

Exciting Fun Filled Week

This first full week of June is filled with activities and fun for all of our students, families and supporters. Monday, June 6th is the date of our annual golf tournament which takes place at the Port Jefferson Country Club, overlooking beautiful Long Island Sound. Many thanks to our golfers and supporters of this fundraising effort. Our students will have a chance to display their athletic talents too, as our Field Day Special Event takes place this week. We will have many activities for the children and every child is a winner! Look in your child's backpack for more information. The crowning event this week is our NIS Prom for our graduates. This will take place at the Atlantis Aquarium in Riverhead. The children and their parents will enjoy dinner, viewing the displays of marine life, and dancing with their friends and parents to the music provided by our DJ.

Annual Golf Outing

The 15th Annual Golf Outing will be held on June 6th at the beautiful Port Jefferson Country Club, overlooking the Long Island Sound. We are looking forward to a great day of golf. A barbeque luncheon will be served on the course, with a cocktail hour, dinner, auction and raffle prizes concluding the day. All proceeds go towards supporting NIS programs. May Special Event

We celebrate music and the arts this month! Our children choose a song, then create props and design scenery to illustrate the song. They will be performing to the delight of their parents and all the staff. Look in your child's backpack for the schedule and further information.

Staff Development Day

Just a reminder that Friday, May 13 our preschool classes will be cancelled so that we may hold our Staff Development Day. On that day, our staff will be exploring new ideas in education and therapeutic practice. We believe that by enriching our staff, we enrich the programs for our children. Classes will resume on Monday, May 16.

Spring Plant Sale

To prove that spring is really here, we are having our annual Plant Sale during the week of May 2-6. We will be offering an array of flowers such as gerbera daisies, hibiscus, geraniums, New Guinea impatiens and more! They will be sold in flats, pots, hanging baskets and patio pots. Payment must be made either in cash or by check. As always, the funds we raise from this event go towards enriching the programs for our students. Many thanks to all the parent volunteers who are helping out with this sale.

This month's special event centers around some well loved stories such as "The Hungry Caterpillar," " The Big Green Monster" and "Clifford, the Red Dog." Week of the Young Child

The official "Week of the Young Child" has started. This is always a special week for us as we celebrate the wonder, joy and excitement of our children. This week we are highlighting the importance of early literacy in the lives of young children.We have arranged for two authors, Brian Heinz and Michele Zimmerman to come to our school to meet with the students. We have also invited various community members who will read stories to our students.

A Visit from the Pet Therapy Dog

Tori, the pet therapy dog, made her monthly visit to NIS today. She is a beautiful German Shepherd who is certified as a pet therapy dog. Today she showed us some of her tricks. Tori can catch a ball in her mouth, and can be coaxed to sing! After our students saw her respond to the commands to sit and lay down, they decided that she is a "good listener."

Family Fun night

On Sept. 22, we will be hosting an after school family fun night that we hope will serve as an introduction to our NIS families. We will set up a variety of activities for the children and have some fun snacks. Siblings are welcome to join.
At the same time our NIS families will have an opportunity to visit our annual Scholastic Book Fair, an event run by the Parent Council. This is an opportunity to get a head start on a child's book collection and support the fundraising efforts of NIS.
